Lawn Bowls-Super Veteran-Mavis Kelly

For Mavis, what was to be a lunch with her fellow bowlers to celebrate her eightieth birthday, turned into a roller-coaster of surprises? The first was when she walked into Chairperson’s Gwen’s house to be confronted by all her bowling friends wishing her well. The second was getting presented with her Super Veterans Badge by the VLBA President, Maureen Connolly. After the presentation and cutting of the cake, Mavis kept everyone entertained with her funny stories of the past.

Mavis moved from Victoria to Palmwoods, Qld. in 1983 where she joined the Bowls club to make new friends. It was not long before she made her mark on the club, winning the Ladies singles championship in 1985 and 1986 as well as the pairs twice and triples once. Not a bad effort for only seven years.

From the “Sunshine Coast”, the move was back to Victoria- Eaglehawk (Bendigo) where once again Mavis started playing bowls at the local club. Three pairs and one mixed pair’s championship later, Mavis was again on the move. This time to Hampton Park where she joined her current bowls club in 1998. Being able to make friends very easily, it was not long before Mavis had won the Ladies pairs followed by a win in the club open 100up championship. In 2001 and 2002, Mavis used her skills to win the club Indoor Bowls Ladies championship as well as being runner-up in 2005 and 2006.

Mavis was not only very talented at playing bowls, but is extremely good at raising funds for the club. The trading table was started by Mavis in 2002 and raises annually over $1000.00 per year. The Wednesday Accumulator was started by Mavis and with the help of other members is still drawing around 40 players per week.
